October Lynx Online

LYNX XXVI:3,October, 2011. Friends, Jane and Werner Reichhold have announced the October 2011 issue of Lynx, linked above. In this issue, you will find four ghazals, as well as collaborative poems, hauku, tanka, haibun, symbiotic poetry, and tanka. The ghazals are by Steffen Horstmann, Ruth Holzer, Ed Baranosky, and Gene Doty. Steffen has two ghazals in the September Equinox issue of The Ghazal Page, to be published in a few days. There’s also a sijo by Gino Peregrini.

I’m really pleased to appear again in Lynx.

If you’re not familiar with Lynx I strongly recommend you have a look at it; if you are familiar with it, you know there is an astounding variety of forms, authors, and approaches. Lynx is open to ghazals, so if you’re writing ghazals, consider submitting to them.

Ghazal for 9/11

“Where were you on 9/11?” I was in the Writing Center at Missouri S & T, reading news online before my first class started. When I saw the video of the planes hitting the Twin Towers — well, you know … a mixture of shock, anger, and grief.

I began writing the ghazal below soon after the attacks. When I saw an announcement for A Time of Trial, I submitted it. Listening to some of the memorial events this morning, I decided to post the poem here. Bibliographical information on the anthology follows the poem.

The Fraternity of Old Men

I wrote the poem below after greeting another old man across the roof of his pickup. I was leaving the doctor’s office, he was arriving. We passed a couple of remarks about the weather. I realized then that there is an informal, unspoken fraternity of old men. Well, leave it to a poet to speak the unspoken!

Recursive Angel Returns!

Several years ago, David Sutherland was the main editor and publisher of a literary Web 'zine, Recursive Angel. RA published cutting edge poetry, fiction, and graphics. I was one of the poetry editors for RA then.

David Sutherland is starting Recursive Angel again. I (Gene Doty) am managing editor, responsible for selecting poetry. Before writing briefly about "what I want," here two important points:

  1. The URL for Recursive Angel is www.recursiveangel.org. That org is crucial, as there's an online gambling site, the URL of which ends com. So, if you wind up there, just change "com" to "org" and you're good to go.
  2. Submission to Recursive Angel is through a service called "Submishmash." There's a submission link on the site: please submit only through the link on the site. Do not send poems directly to me. (If you have trouble with Submishmash, please do write me. My email address for RA is gino@ghazalpage.net.

Now, "what do I want?" Poetry that challenges the reader, that pushes the envelope somewhere in some way. There are no formal specifications nor desired content. Send the strongest poetry you have, knowing that RA is competitive. (And pays a little bit too.) Ghazals will be considered along with other forms, but RA is not merely an extension of The Ghazal Page.

Unfortunately, the earlier issues of RA have gone into the great cyber-nowhere, so I don't have examples for you. However, examples might keep you from sending a poem that would be successful with RA.

Old Man Blues, the Intro

Old Man Blues will focus on the things that occupy me during retirement. I'll talk about books I read, music I listen to, food I eat, and cook, movies I watch, places I go. A miscellany, in other words. Don't take "blues" to mean down-hearted and gloomy. Think instead of melody, improvisation, and a thumping beat. This is definitely Gene Doty's endeavor while Gino Peregrini does the ghazal stuff.
