“What ya doin’, Mister?”

That's a good question. What does an old guy do when he's no longer doing what he did for so long?

For 42 years, I was a faculty member at Missouri University of Science & Technology. For over 60 years, every fall saw me going to school as a student or a teacher. For the last three and half years of my career, I was chair of the Department of English & Technical Communication.

All that is over. On 31 August this year, a Monday, I thought, "It's a week until Labor Day . . . ahh, a three-day weekend!" Then I thought, "So what? It's all weekend!"

Now I have time to mimic Whitman to "lean and loaf" and "invite my soul."

I've been retired for two and half months now. One thing I've done is start this blog. I've also been going to Vessell's Fitness Complex, a very nice facility to which I belonged for a number of years. A friend there, who's been retired longer than I, asked what I was doing with my time. I gave him an idea of what I'm doing. He responded that I had a schedule and that was good. As it is.

I was exhausted when I retired. One thing I've tried to avoid is loading up on obligations. That's gone well. Other activities will be reflected in other posts here.

Ghazal for Young Lovers

Not all the lovers in this ghazal are actually young; consider it poetic license. “Ghazal for Young Lovers” was first published in Southwinds, Missouri S&T‘s student literary magazine, spring 2009.

The faces at the windows inspect our passion;
we are caught in a plot to dissect our passion.

How did Layla’s absence shape Majnun’s dreams?
How do our separate dreams inflect our passion?

Caught in the net of Yusef’s beauty, Zulaikha
Called him to her; let her need reflect our passion.

In the vineyards, the Shepherd and the Bride share
Clandestine meetings: Who will respect our passion?

Neither Montague or Capulet, we sip no draft,
Have no enemies to bisect our passion.

Oh, Rose, when strange forces have set us apart,
Let us find each other and perfect our passion.
