100 Thousand Poets for Change

Here’s an event coming up in a few weeks (Sept. 24) that you may be interested in. It is a globally gathering of poets, organized through Big Bridge. This site has listings of events already planned all over the world. Have a look and see if it draws you in.

In case you’re curious, I don’t plan now to participate in this event. I’m not much of an organizer or joiner. But I’m sure 100K poets for change will strike a chord with some of you.

Examining Poetry

Bill Batcher, who has contributed several ghazals to The Ghazal Page (most recently in April 2009), has begun a blog, The NY Poetry Examiner. Bill's first article, "The Puzzle of a Ghazal," explains the Persian/Urdu ghazal form, using his "waiting room" ghazal as an example. He does see a "hidden unity" behind the apparently unconnected couplets of a ghazal. Some readers might want to differ with that. There is, in fact, precedent in the traditional ghazal for a more overt thematic development, and the couplets of an Arabic ghazal can connect grammatically and semantically.

Bill's new project is exciting. Have a look for yourself!
